Birch Gold Group Reviews: Ratings, Minimum and Alternatives

Gold bars and coins beside the words Birch Gold Group Reviews

Birch Gold Group is one of the better-known names in gold IRAs. It says it is regularly featured on shows such as the Liberty Report with Ron Paul and War Room with Steve Bannon, and it lists a long roster of media endorsements. If you have heard of it that way and want to know whether the company is worth calling, this review sets out what Birch says about itself, what its public record shows, and how it compares with the companies we rank on this site.

We are not paid by Birch Gold Group and we have not been its customer. Everything below comes from Birch's own website and its Better Business Bureau listing, read on November 5, 2026, and we say where a figure is the company's own claim.

The short version: Birch Gold Group is an established, BBB A+ rated dealer with a low starting amount of $5,000, a choice of custodians and depositories, and all four IRA metals. It suits buyers with smaller amounts who want a broad product range. If you are moving $50,000 or more and want the process explained before anyone sells you anything, Augusta Precious Metals, our first-ranked company, is the one we would call first. If you want a low starting amount from a company we rank, see American Hartford Gold below.

Reputation and ratings

Better Business Bureau. Birch Gold Group's BBB listing shows an A+ rating, the BBB's highest. Birch's reviews page says it has been BBB accredited since November 14, 2011. The BBB rating measures how a business deals with complaints and its time in business; it is not a review of prices or products.

Other platforms. Birch says it holds an AAA rating with the Business Consumer Alliance and points readers to its reviews on Google, Trustpilot and ConsumerAffairs. It also says Newsmax has named it a "Major Gold and Silver Dealer". Review scores change, so check the current figures on each platform rather than relying on any number quoted by a review site, this one included.

How long it has operated. Birch's own pages say it has served customers "since 2011" and that it is based in Des Moines. Many third-party review sites say it was founded in 2003 in Burbank, California. We could not find a primary source that settles the difference, so we report both. Either way, it has been operating for well over a decade.

Regulatory record. We searched for enforcement actions by the CFTC, the SEC, the FTC and state attorneys general naming Birch Gold Group and did not find one in the sources we checked. Some low-quality websites mention lawsuits; we could not confirm any of them from a court or regulator, so we do not repeat them. That is not proof that no complaint or case exists. Read the complaints section of its BBB profile before you commit, as you would with any dealer.

Augusta Precious Metals offer

How much you need to start

Birch's FAQ says it currently requires $5,000 to start, and that the minimum applies both to precious metals IRAs and to metals delivered to your home. It adds that the figure can vary with market conditions and product availability, so confirm it when you call.

That is one of the lowest starting amounts among well-known gold IRA companies, and it is the main reason buyers with smaller retirement accounts look at Birch. For comparison, Augusta Precious Metals asks for $50,000, and American Hartford Gold states a $10,000 minimum order for its gold IRA.

Products and accounts

Birch sells gold, silver, platinum and palladium, both for retirement accounts and for delivery. Its IRA pages list a gold IRA, silver IRA, platinum and palladium IRAs, and a precious metals IRA that can hold a mix of all four. Its gold IRA page sets out the IRS purity standard correctly: gold must be at least 99.5% pure, with an exception for the American Gold Eagle.

If you want platinum or palladium in a retirement account, Birch is one of the few companies that offers both. Few buyers hold much of either, but the option is there.

Custodians and storage

Custodians. Birch's FAQ says customers' IRAs are typically held by Equity Trust Company or GoldStar Trust Company, and that you view your holdings through the custodian's own online portal, not through Birch. Naming the custodians in advance is a good sign: you can research them yourself.

Depositories. Birch lists five storage options: Delaware Depository, Brink's Global Services, International Depository Services, Texas Precious Metals Depository and Texas Bullion Depository. That is a wider choice than most companies offer, which suits buyers who care where their metal is held.

Costs

Birch's website lists the custodian and storage charges customers can usually expect, and says it pays the first year's charges on new accounts above a certain size. We do not reproduce cost figures on this site, because published numbers go out of date and the charges depend on the account. Ask Birch for every charge in writing, including the custodian's and depository's, and compare them with at least one other company.

As with any dealer, the bigger cost is usually in the price of the metal: the premium over the spot price when you buy and the gap to the buyback price when you sell. Our guide to gold IRA fees explains how to compare quotes on a like-for-like basis.

Buyback

Birch's FAQ says it "always welcome[s] the opportunity to buy back metals we have sold to our customers", and that you can request a buyback quote based on the product type, mint, size and market demand. We did not find a written buyback commitment beyond that, so ask exactly how a sale would work and how the price is set before you buy.

How Birch sells

Birch pairs each customer with a precious metals specialist. Its FAQ is open about how they are paid: specialists earn commissions on completed transactions, which it says is common in the industry, while stressing that its approach puts education and transparency ahead of pressure. That candour is welcome. It also means you should treat any product recommendation as a sales recommendation, and ask why a particular coin or bar is being suggested.

Birch also leans on endorsements from well-known media and political figures, including Ron Paul and Steve Bannon, and appears on their shows. Whether that matters to you is a personal judgment. It says nothing about the prices you will be quoted.

Questions to ask Birch Gold Group, or any dealer

  • What is the price of each item you are recommending, and what would you pay to buy the same items back today?
  • Which custodian and depository will hold my account, and what does each charge every year? Please put it in writing.
  • Is the storage commingled or segregated?
  • Why are you recommending these particular coins or bars rather than standard bullion?
  • How is my specialist paid on this order?
  • What happens if I want to sell, and how quickly is the money paid?

A company worth working with answers each of these clearly. Our gold scammer list shows what regulators have found when dealers did not.

That depends on your circumstances, which a website cannot judge. Gold pays no income and its price can fall. Speak with a licensed financial professional who is not paid on the sale.

The bottom line

Its specialists are paid on commission and it markets heavily through endorsements, so go in with written questions and compare its quotes with another company's.

If you are moving a larger retirement account and want to understand everything before you buy, start with Augusta Precious Metals. If you are starting smaller, compare Birch with American Hartford Gold.
