This page tracks the price of silver per troy ounce in U.S. dollars. The figure at the top is the current spot price, with its time stamp. Below it, the chart shows daily closing prices; switch between the past month, six months, year, five years and the full history since 2000 with the tabs, and hover over or tap the line to read any day's price. A table of the last 30 closes sits further down the page.
Silver moves more than gold, so the time stamp matters. The chart is refreshed several times a day, and the headline price can update again when the page loads.
The short version: the silver price per ounce you see quoted is the spot price, the wholesale price for large amounts of silver. You will not buy a coin or bar at that price. Dealers sell above spot and buy back below it, and on silver the gap is larger, as a share of the price, than on gold. Use this page to check any quote: work out what you are being charged per ounce and compare it with spot.

What the silver price per ounce means
It is per troy ounce. Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces of 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than the 28.35-gram ounce used for food. A "one-ounce" silver coin contains one troy ounce of silver.
It is for pure silver. The quoted price is for the silver content alone. A coin that is 90% silver is worth 90% of its weight in silver, before any premium.
Spot and futures. The headline figure is a spot quote: the price for silver delivered now. The chart's history uses the daily closes of COMEX silver futures (symbol SI=F), the main U.S. benchmark. The two usually differ by only a small amount.
Closes, not intraday swings. Each point is one day's close. Silver can swing widely inside a single session, so the day's high and low are shown in the tiles under the chart rather than on the line. The five-year view plots one close a week and the all-time view one a month, so a short spike can disappear from those views: the record daily close in the series, $115.08 on January 26, 2026, is higher than the all-time line reaches.
Silver price per gram, kilo and other units
Multiply the ounce price by these factors to convert it:
| Unit | Weight in grams | Troy ounces (multiply the ounce price by this) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | 1 | 0.03215 |
| 1 troy ounce | 31.1035 | 1 |
| 10 troy ounce bar | 311.035 | 10 |
| 1 pound (avoirdupois) | 453.592 | 14.58 |
| 1 kilogram | 1,000 | 32.15 |
| 100 troy ounce bar | 3,110.35 | 100 |
| 1,000 troy ounce bar | 31,103.5 | 1,000 |
Large 1,000-ounce bars vary a little in weight, and each is stamped with its exact weight, which is what you pay for. Our guide to buying 1,000 ounces of silver covers what that much silver weighs and how it is stored.
Silver in older U.S. coins
U.S. dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver. From their official weights (2.5 grams for a dime, 6.25 grams for a quarter and 12.5 grams for a half dollar), every dollar of face value in these coins contains about 0.723 troy ounces of silver when new. To estimate their melt value, multiply the face value by 0.723 and by the spot price. Worn coins weigh slightly less, and dealers buy them at a discount to melt value.
From the spot price to the price you pay
Physical silver always costs more than spot. The extra is the premium, and it covers minting or refining, distribution and the dealer's margin.
On silver, premiums take up a bigger share of the price than on gold, because the cost of making and shipping a coin is much the same while the metal inside is worth far less. As a rule:
- Large bars (100 ounces and up) carry the lowest premium per ounce.
- 10-ounce and one-ounce bars cost a little more per ounce.
- Privately minted rounds sit between bars and coins.
- Government bullion coins, such as the American Silver Eagle and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, cost the most per ounce among bullion products, but every dealer knows them.
- Proof, collectible and "limited" coins can cost several times their silver value. Avoid them if you are buying for the metal.
When you sell, dealers usually pay a little below spot for common bullion. The gap between the buying and selling price is your real cost, and it is the number to ask about before you buy.
How to check a quote: divide the price of the item by the troy ounces of silver it contains, then compare the result with the spot price at the top of this page. The difference is the premium you are being charged.
Silver's price history in brief
Switch the chart to All time to see the full record since 2000. Some milestones from the daily closes behind it:
- 2000 to 2010: silver spent the early 2000s near $5 an ounce and climbed through the decade, with a sharp fall in the 2008 crisis.
- April 2011: it closed at $48.58, its high for the next fourteen years.
- 2011 to 2020: a long decline and years of sideways trading, ending with a close of $11.73 on March 18, 2020, during the pandemic panic.
- 2025: silver rose 142% over the year and closed above its 2011 high for the first time in October.
- January 26, 2026: a record close of $115.08. Four days later it fell 31% in a single session, the largest one-day drop in the series.
- 2026: the fall continued for months, to a close of $49.10 on October 30, 2026.

What moves the silver price
Silver sits between two worlds, which is why it moves so much.
- Industrial demand. According to the Silver Institute's April 2026 report, industrial uses took 657.4 million of the 1.13 billion ounces of silver demanded in 2025: electronics, electrical systems, solar panels and more. When industry slows, or manufacturers use less silver per product, demand falls.
- Buyers of coins and bars. The same report says coin and bar demand rose 14% in 2025. Interest from individual buyers rises and falls with prices and with confidence in the economy.
- Supply. Much of the world's silver is mined as a by-product of lead, zinc, copper and gold, so higher silver prices do not quickly produce more silver. The Silver Institute reported that demand exceeded supply in 2025 for the fifth year in a row.
- Gold and the dollar. Silver often moves in the same direction as gold, but further. The gold-silver ratio, explained in should I buy gold or silver right now, tracks how far apart they drift.
- Interest rates. Like gold, silver pays no interest, so higher rates raise the cost of holding it.

FAQ
What is the silver price per ounce today?
The current spot price is at the top of this page, with the time it was last updated. The chart and table are refreshed several times a day.
Why does a silver coin cost more than the spot price?
Because of the premium: the cost of minting, distribution and the dealer's margin. On silver it is a larger share of the price than on gold, and it is highest on collectible and proof coins.
How much is a gram of silver worth?
Multiply the price per troy ounce by 0.03215. That is the value of pure silver; jewelry and sterling (92.5% silver) are worth less per gram.
How much silver is in old U.S. coins?
Dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver. Each dollar of face value contains about 0.723 troy ounces of silver when the coins are new.
What was the highest silver price ever?
In the COMEX futures series used on this page, the record daily close was $115.08 an ounce, on January 26, 2026. Silver traded higher during some sessions that month.
Why doesn't the all-time chart show the record?
The all-time view plots one closing price a month, so a short spike inside a month does not appear. The shorter ranges plot every trading day.
How often is the chart updated?
Automatically, several times a day. The headline price may also update when the page loads. The time of the last update is shown under the price.
Is silver a good thing to buy now?
Nobody can predict silver's next move, and a website cannot judge your circumstances. Silver pays no income and its price can fall by half. Speak with a licensed financial professional who is not paid on the sale.
