Goldco vs American Hartford Gold: Which Is Better?

Stacked gold bars and gold coins beside the words Goldco vs American Hartford Gold

Goldco and American Hartford Gold are two of the best-known gold companies in the country. Both sell physical gold and silver for retirement accounts and for home delivery. Both hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Both will send you a free guide before you spend anything.

On paper they look alike. In practice they differ on three things that matter when you are about to move real money: how much each asks you to start with, how much each publishes about custody and storage, and what each says in writing about buying your metals back.

The short answer: Goldco is our pick of the two overall. It has the longer Better Business Bureau record, the more specific buyback policy, and a current free silver promotion.* American Hartford Gold is the better fit if you are starting with a smaller amount, since it publishes a $10,000 minimum for an IRA, or if you want to choose where your metal is stored. In our ranking of three companies, Goldco is second and American Hartford Gold is third.

Facts on this page were read from each company's own website on October 2, 2026, and from its Better Business Bureau profile. We did not open an account with either company or test them as customers, and we say where a figure is the company's own claim.

These scores are as each company reports them, so check the profiles yourself for current numbers. Read some of the low-rated reviews too. How a company answers a complaint tells you more than its average.

Goldco has the longer record. It has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since December 2011, more than four years before American Hartford Gold, and it reports more than 8,000 five-star reviews across platforms.

American Hartford Gold has the scale. It says it has served 2 million Americans and delivered more than $4 billion in precious metals. Goldco puts its own figure at more than $3 billion placed.

Both have earned their ratings over years, with thousands of customers. On reputation alone there is little to separate them, with a small edge to Goldco for length of record.

Awards and endorsements

  • Goldco says it has made the Inc. 5000 list nine times, received a 2025 Bronze Stevie Award, and was named Best Customer Service for 2026 by Money.com.
  • American Hartford Gold says it is a five-time Inc. 5000 honoree.

Both companies also advertise through well-known media figures. An endorsement is advertising, not a review, so give it less weight than the ratings above.

How much you need to start

This is where the two differ most clearly.

American Hartford Gold publishes a $10,000 minimum for a gold IRA. For someone who wants to move a modest slice of a retirement account into gold, a published and reachable figure is a real advantage. Its minimum for a cash purchase is not published.

Goldco does not publish a minimum on the pages we read. That does not mean it is high, but it does mean you find out on the phone.

If you already know you are starting near $10,000, American Hartford Gold is the simpler call to make first.

Goldco offer

The buying experience

Both companies are built to make a first purchase straightforward, and they go about it slightly differently.

Goldco emphasises speed and guidance. It describes a three-step setup, says a representative walks you through each step, and advertises that an account can be opened in a day. The reviews it publishes mention knowledgeable staff and an absence of pressure again and again.

American Hartford Gold lets you begin either by phone or through an online intake form, which suits people who would sooner fill in a form than take a call. Its account executives then handle the transfer from your existing retirement plan.

Neither approach is better in itself. If you like to start online and at your own pace, American Hartford Gold's form is a small point in its favour. If you want someone to lead you through it, both will.

Buyback: what each puts in writing

Neither company can legally guarantee to buy your metals back, and both say so in their own way.

Goldco states that it will buy back metals purchased from Goldco at any time. Its "highest price" promise applies once three years have passed since your first purchase, and no specific rate is guaranteed in advance.

American Hartford Gold has what it calls a Buyback Commitment. It encourages clients to contact it first when they want to sell and describes a three-step liquidation process. It says plainly that it cannot legally guarantee to repurchase metals.

Goldco's wording is the more specific of the two, and that is one of the main reasons it ranks higher on this site. American Hartford Gold deserves credit for candor. With either company, ask for the buyback price of the exact items you are buying on the day you buy them, and compare it with what you are paying.

Storage and custodians

IRA gold has to be held through a custodian and stored at an approved depository. It cannot be kept at home.

American Hartford Gold tells you more in advance. Its custodian is Equity Trust Company. It names its depositories, including Brink's Global Services and Delaware Depository, and it lets you choose. It also explains that storage is commingled by default, meaning you get back metal of the same type and quality, and that segregated storage, where your own pieces are kept apart, is available on request.

Goldco tells you on the call. It says it works with all major self-directed IRA custodians and that IRA metals are stored in a secure vault at an insured depository, but it does not name either on the pages we read.

If knowing exactly who holds your account and where your metal sits matters to you before you pick up the phone, American Hartford Gold has the advantage here.

Products and ways to buy

  • Both sell IRA-eligible gold and silver coins and bars.
  • Both sell outside a retirement account. Goldco calls this a direct purchase. American Hartford Gold calls it physical delivery, ships insured to your door, and says no account or custodian is needed.
  • American Hartford Gold also sells platinum.
  • Both describe opening an IRA as three steps and handle the rollover paperwork with you.

For most buyers the product ranges are equivalent. If you want platinum alongside gold and silver, that points to American Hartford Gold.

Promotions

Goldco currently advertises up to 10% in free silver on qualifying orders.* The conditions are set out at the foot of this page, and they apply to larger purchases of particular coins. If your order qualifies, the promotion adds to what you receive. Goldco also advertises a price match.

American Hartford Gold runs its own offers, which change. Ask each company what applies to an order of your size, get it in writing, and compare the total ounces you would receive for the same money. That comparison, not the headline offer, tells you which deal is better.

The free guides compared

Both companies offer a free guide, and requesting one does not open an account or move any money. In both cases you provide a phone number and should expect a call.

  • Goldco's is its gold and silver kit, covering how to own physical metals and how a precious metals IRA works.
  • American Hartford Gold's is its Gold & Silver Preservation Guide for 2026.

You do not have to pick one. Requesting both costs nothing, and two calls with the same list of questions is the fastest way to compare the companies. Our article on the free gold IRA kit explains what to look for in any guide.

Things to know about both

  • Neither can guarantee a buyback. Both say so.
  • Expect a phone call after you request either guide.
  • We leave costs out of this comparison. The numbers that circulate online are often wrong or out of date. Ask each company for its current schedule in writing.
  • Gold and silver can fall in price. Neither company can change that.
