Sterling silver does not trade on any market under its own name. Its value comes entirely from the silver inside it, so every number on this page is calculated as 92.5% of the silver price. The page refreshes several times a day.

The short version: to value a sterling item, weigh it in grams, multiply by the per-gram figure above, and you have its melt value: the worth of the silver it contains. A buyer of scrap silver will usually pay somewhat less than that. A well-known maker, a collectible pattern or an antique can be worth more.

What 925 sterling silver is

Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Pure silver is too soft for most jewelry and tableware; the copper makes it harder and more durable without changing its look much.

That is where the number 925 comes from: 925 parts silver per 1,000. Sterling items are usually stamped with one of these marks:

  • 925
  • STER, STERLING or Sterling Silver
  • In the United Kingdom, a lion passant (a walking lion) hallmark

A sterling stamp is a claim by the maker, not a guarantee. A reputable buyer will test the metal before paying.

Silver-plated items look like sterling but contain only a microscopically thin layer of silver over a base metal. Their silver content is not worth recovering, so check the marks before you weigh anything.

How to work out what your sterling silver is worth

  1. Check the marks to confirm the piece is sterling and not plated.
  2. Weigh it in grams. A kitchen scale is fine for an estimate; a jeweler's scale is better.
  3. Subtract anything that is not silver. Gemstones, steel knife blades, wooden or plastic handles and weighted bases all add weight without adding silver.
  4. Multiply the weight in grams by the per-gram value in the table at the top of this page.

An example: a sterling bracelet weighing 30 grams contains 30 × 0.925 = 27.75 grams of pure silver. Its melt value is 30 times the per-gram sterling figure above.

If your scale reads in ounces, remember that kitchen ounces (28.35 grams) are lighter than the troy ounces silver is priced in (31.1035 grams). Convert to grams first to avoid an error of nearly 10%.

Items that weigh more than their silver

  • Knives: most sterling table knives have stainless steel blades and hollow handles filled with a cement-like material. Only the handle shell is sterling, often a small fraction of the knife's weight.
  • Candlesticks and some bowls: many are "weighted", with a base filled with pitch, plaster or cement to make them stable. The thin sterling shell may hold only a fraction of the weight on the scale.
  • Jewelry: stones, clasps in other metals and glued components all reduce the silver content.

A buyer may ask to take these items apart, or will estimate the sterling content and price accordingly.

Augusta Precious Metals offer

What a buyer will actually pay

The melt value above is the ceiling for scrap sterling, not the price you will be offered. Buyers of scrap silver pay a percentage of melt value to cover their testing, refining and margin, and that percentage varies a lot between buyers. Before you sell:

  • Get at least two or three offers for the same items.
  • Ask how the offer was worked out: the weight, the silver price used and the percentage paid.
  • Watch the weighing. The scale should be in plain view and in grams or troy ounces.
  • Be wary of buyers who will not quote a price before receiving your items, or who quote by "the piece" rather than by weight.

When sterling is worth more than melt: pieces by well-known silversmiths or jewelry houses, collectible flatware patterns, antiques and some designer jewelry can sell for well above their silver content to collectors. If you have something of that kind, ask a specialist dealer or appraiser before selling it as scrap.

Sterling silver price history

Because sterling's value is a fixed share of the silver price, its chart has exactly the same shape as silver's. Switch the chart to All time to see it.

The record daily close in the silver series used here was $115.08 an ounce on January 26, 2026, which puts sterling's value that day at about $106.45 per troy ounce of sterling. Silver then fell sharply over the following months, and sterling's value fell with it. Our silver price per ounce page has the full silver chart and history, and should I buy silver now or wait looks at what 26 years of prices say about timing.

Sterling silver vs silver bullion

If you are interested in silver as metal rather than as jewelry or tableware, sterling and bullion behave very differently.

Sterling silver itemsSilver bullion coins and bars
Silver content92.5%99.9% or higher
Price when you buyMostly craftsmanship and design, not the metalClose to the silver price, plus a premium
Price when you sell as metalA discount to melt valueClose to the silver price
Easy to valueMust be weighed and testedWeight and purity stamped on every piece
Allowed in an IRANoYes, if at least 99.9% pure and held by a custodian

A new sterling necklace might cost several times the value of its silver, and it would sell back for less than that silver value. Bullion is the opposite: you pay a premium when you buy, but every dealer recognizes it and will buy it back close to the market price. If what you want is silver as a store of value, bullion is the form built for that job. Our guide to buying 1,000 ounces of silver compares the bullion forms.

FAQ

What is the 925 sterling silver price today?

The current value per troy ounce, gram, pennyweight, pound and kilogram is shown at the top of this page. It is 92.5% of the silver price and refreshes several times a day.

How much is a gram of 925 silver worth?

See the per-gram figure in the table at the top of this page. It equals the silver price per troy ounce, divided by 31.1035, multiplied by 0.925.

What does 925 mean on jewelry?

It means the piece is sterling silver: 925 parts silver per 1,000, or 92.5% silver, with the rest usually copper.

How much will a buyer pay for sterling silver?

Usually a percentage of its melt value, which varies by buyer. Get offers from two or three buyers and ask each how their price was calculated.

Is sterling silver worth more than its melt value?

Sometimes. Pieces by known makers, collectible patterns, antiques and designer jewelry can be worth more to collectors than the silver they contain. Ordinary or damaged items usually sell for their silver content or less.

Is silver-plated the same as sterling?

No. Silver-plated items have only a very thin layer of silver over a base metal and are worth little as scrap. Look for 925 or STERLING marks; EPNS or "silverplate" marks indicate plating.

Can I put sterling silver in an IRA?

No. IRA silver must be at least 99.9% pure and held by a custodian. Sterling is 92.5% silver.

Why does the sterling price move every day?

Because silver's price does. Sterling's value is a fixed 92.5% of the silver price, so it rises and falls with the silver market.
